About

Jouko Korkeasaari is a Finnish visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice moves between contemporary art, costume art, photography, and performance. Working primarily with recycled, found, and second-hand textiles, they explore the relationships between materiality, identity, the body, and cultural memory. Their work challenges conventional ideas of fashion and clothing, transforming discarded materials into new visual narratives that question consumption, representation, and the boundaries between art, craft, and design.

Under the artistic persona Muotikummitus (Modegeist), Korkeasaari creates distinctive costumes and photographic works that investigate fashion as a cultural phenomenon, a carrier of memories, and a means of constructing identity. Their costumes also take shape in performance, dance, theatre, and film, where material, body, and movement interact.

Korkeasaari is a member of Hyäryllistä, a long-standing Finnish artist group established in 1992. The group's collaborative practice is grounded in slow, repetitive, material-based processes and an exploration of the relationships between individual expression, shared authorship, and the handmade.

Across their diverse practice, Korkeasaari approaches recycling as both an artistic method and a way of engaging with the world, giving existing materials new meanings, forms, and lives.
